How the tournament ends
It was a superb tournament in terms of sponsorship, organization, venue etc. There were many hotels nearby, the venue was a stadium and its extremely beautiful. Though I would love to have the luxury of spending the whole 5 days in a 5 star hotel, I controlled myself for the obvious reason that my pocket wasn't thick enough. I could see lots of business men with small suit-cases moving swiftly that they didn't even bother who dashed at them on the shoulders. Such was the life of corporate businessmen.
I looked at them then the chess players and gosh we chess players need to improve both in terms of life standard and dress ethics. Those chess prodigies no matter how good they are in chess, worn half-pants to attend the tournament hall not aware that some photographers would be taking their photos. Do I have to comment or is it none of my business, all I care about is the standard that my fellow chess players constantly need to improve.
When I looked at the prize money that chess players get, its like a labor's wage or even a little bit worse than that. Why? Let me attest. When I got 2nd in below 2000 tournament all I got was Rs. 6000 + trophy. What was that for? My expenditure including lodging, fooding and travel expenses round about Rs. 5000 or more depending on what I eat during those days. Being a non-veg didn't help economically. What about tennis players, golfer, footballers, boxers, ufc's, they earned in terms of millions. They got hundreds of sponsors, they earn revenues.
Looking back to my business only irked my eyes. It blurred my thinking process and the consequences are infinite. The easy solution would be to give up chess, the problem though is that once you're a chess player you always are a chess player. This might be a universal law. We need Scientists to work on this but how and where are the money and who can afford to pay those god on earth.
My tournament in Chennai was a success in terms of play though it was a disappointment in terms of prize money. I got 4th position with Rs. 5000 as a token. The prize we chess players got and the amount of hard work and sacrifices we made are mismatched. Work overweight income.
The painful truth though is that we have the choice to be who we wanted to be. Being a chess player is our choice and we enjoyed it every moments in aesthetic sense. Chess might be too much for somebody to handle and finally the nature of chess is such that you either like it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.
