The opening choice as we all knows should be based on your playing style for maximum benefits. For example, a positional player choosing a risky openings end up risking his own games. As a white player I recommend 1.e4 though 1.d4 is becoming more and more fashionable. So you play 1.e4 and now what? These openings await your reply :
1. Sicilian defense : Playing e4 and not knowing sicilian is a 100% way to face disaster. Know something about this opening. Its worth your time.
2. Ruy lopez : By playing e4 no one can escape ruy not even the luckiest on the planet. These sicilian and ruy are the heavyweights of e4 openings.
3. French defense : Not all players are ready to push two squares for their pawns, some will definitely push just one square. This defense is tried and tested. Therefore, know something about it before its too late.
4. Caro Kann : French's brothers some say but I don't think so. Believe me they are totally different both in style and strategy.
5. Scandinavian, alekhine, pirc : These are also common against the e4 openings. As a white player have at least one line at your disposal upto ten moves deep.
So now your black. You don't have much choice. Better prepare against four heavyweights.
1. e4 Here I strongly recommend playing the sicilian. Playing sicilian as black will also help when your white and facing sicilian. So nothing to lose. This opening will be there as long as chess is.
2. d4 Against d4, there are many openings you can choose, most of them really good though I recommend playing the grundfeld defense. A warning though is to know some concrete lines before starting grundfeld. Some good books are available for deeper understanding.
3. c4 Also know as the english defense. Gary kasparov played it when he was young. This opening is one of the pain for all blacks player.
4. Nf3 Don't worry here because you can transpose to other openings. Just play g6, bg7, 0-0, setup depending on whites move order.
