HOW TO GET FIDE CHESS RATING

If you didn't have a chess rating yet, then you are known by fide organization as unrated. Being unrated doesn't necessarily mean you could not play chess well. It simply means you haven't participated a single fide chess tournament.

Getting the fide chess rating is as easy as participating one fide recognized chess tournament. It sounds quite difficult at first. Maybe it is for those who are new to chess and who are unfortunately very unfortunate to beat at least one game against his fellow rated humans since winning a game against apes & unrated not counted.

The requirements for getting fide chess rating is as follows:
1. Play fide recognized tournament.
2. Complete minimum 9 games against fide rated players (game against unrated not counted) within a year.
3. Score at least 1 point from rated players.

If you fulfill the above requirements, your name will be published in the next fide rating list along with your rating. The list is published 6 times a year (Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sept, Nov).

How to know where you stand

Chess level is divided based on the skills of the player. Compare the table below to know where you stand based on your rating.

Rating 2500 above = Grandmasters (GM)
Rating 2400 above = International master (IM)
Rating 2300 above = Fide master (FM)
Rating 2200 above = National master (NM)
Rating 2000-2199 = Expert
Rating 1800-1999 = Class A
Rating 1600-1799 = Class B
Rating 1400-1599 = Class C
Rating 1200-1399 = Class D
Rating 1000-1199 = Class E
Rating 800-999 = Class F
Rating 600-799 = Class G

Suppose if you get your first published rating as 1654, then you are a class B player, not bad to start. If you get your rating as 679, I am sorry change your hobby, no offense. If you get your rating as 2000 above, wow!! your an expert. Put serious study, you may become a master one day. If you get your rating as 2014 and lose 16 points after that, your rating is now 1998. You temporarily stay as an expert and went back to class A which sometimes happen to both lucky/unlucky, both male/female.

Rating is an estimation of the player's strength based on his/her performance against other rated players. Depending on win/lose/draw, it increases/decreases.

  1. Note: If the initial rating the person gets is less than 1200 (from 1st july 2009 onwards), it is disregarded since it's the rating floor. ie the first rating the person gets will be above 1200 in order to be published. Though it's possible to have a rating lower than 1200 eg 980.

or i just play an open fide rated tournament and i will get the rating.?

  6. You can play an open FIDE rated tournament. Since you are from Delhi, for you to play the tournament, you shall eventually be paying the membership for DCA as well in addition to the tournament fees.

  12. My question was related to my son. He participated in a rating event in June 2013. He won 1 game against 5 rated players. Till which period he should complete his balance 3 games

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's actually 26 months but that's irrelevant, he should complete the remaining 4 games as per the fide rules to get his rating published.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Pls explain me that how exactly my rating wil start and what are the things that i have to do.

  15. I played 3 Fide rated players in May 2014 but lost to all. Will these games carry forward to the count of 9 Fide rated games in my next Fide tournament?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes the three games will be counted. The important thing is winning against rated players. Depending on the average rating of your opponent your rating will be calculated. Winning against high rated players would give more ratings.

  17. Dear
I dont have FIDE ID. Can I participate in FIDE rated tournament? Some says first get FIDE ID then only you can praticipate and some says before the beginning of tournament, get registered with federation which is sufficient to participate in FIDE rated tournament.
Kindly clarify the rules as per latest FIDE regulations.

    Regards/Vikrant (India)

    1. Of course, you need registration. It's Rs 250/ pay to All India chess federation. They will inform new players about this when you pay entry fee for tournament.

Then ask the organisers about your FIDE ID. ID is a unique number that FIDE recognises you.

  20. For Welkom, you can contact local chess club. They will know a thing or two about tournaments in your place. Play them.

Regarding FIDE ID, you get the moment you play your first tournament. You could ask the tournament organisers. Recently, it is displayed in notice board so that all new players could look up to.

  22. There are three formats of the game :
    1. Classical (long time control)
    2. Rapid (medium time control)
    3. Blitz (short time control)

For rapid and blitz, if you have classical rating then that would be your starting rapid and blitz rating i.e say you have 1500 fide rating (classical), your rapid and blitz rating would be 1500.

If you are new and played rapid tournaments, the requirements for getting rating is same as classical ie. play minimum 5 to 9 games within the period of 26 months.

    1. FIDE Rating Regulations effective from 1 July 2014

      1. He must score minimum 1/2 points from 5 rated games against rated players.
      2. The rating floor is 1000.
      3. The condition of a minimum of 5 games need not be met in one tournament. Results from other tournaments played within consecutive rating periods totalling not more than 26 months, are pooled to obtain the initial rating.

    1. To get FIDE ID just play a rated tournament and the tournament organizer will provide it for you. In your first tournament you would need All India Chess Federation registration which is Rs.250 for a year.

For tournament information, look at AICF website.

  32. I'm from coimbatore, tamilnadu. so to play in fide tournaments, do i need to register in aicf and tamilnadu chess association and coimbatore chess association? or its enough to register in any one of them?
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You need both AICF and Tamil Nadu chess association registration. Tamil Nadu chess association registration is needed only if you choose to play under Tamil Nadu state like state championship or if you want to represent your state in national championship. For FIDE tournaments, AICF will be enough.

    1. Join UKCA if you want to play state championship or if you want to represent Karnataka. AICF will be enough if you play all open tournaments. Look at AICF calendar for tournament information.

  40. I got an initial rating of 1166 and unfortunately it is too low. It will take a really long time to increase it. Is there any way to become unrated again, so that I can defeat the proper players and get a higher initial rating

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unfortunately no, ratings are internationally registered and recognized by FIDE and therefore it's permanent.

My advice to you is to ignore the ratings and focus on your chess development. Ratings can be increased as you win more and more games.

    1. Yes absolutely. Go to https://arena.myfide.net/ or search in google FIDE ARENA. You will need to register a membership. It's an official website for online chess from FIDE which recognizes your rating in standard, blitz and bullet.

  42. Do I need to get a FIDE ID before entering my first FIDE tournament? Also is there any criteria for qualifications to enter one? Also clarify to me if I need to pay to register in a FIDE tournament to get a rating.. Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, the organizers will assign a unique FIDE ID when you registered for the tournament. For all India chess federation(AICF), the membership fee = Rs. 250/year.($3.86 a year)
Yes, you would need to be a member of any affiliated FIDE members. Since AICF is FIDE affiliated, playing any tournaments sponsored by them is recognized by FIDE and hence earn you a rating.
