HOW TO BECOME CHESS EXPERT

Chess is an old game played by two people among friends and relatives. Today, computer had joined the bandwagon and would handily beat any grandmaster. Becoming an expert in chess is no longer a problem even for people who has no over the board tournament experience but rather a surety for anyone with dedication and love for the game.

For new chess players, they can look up houdini 1.5(chess engine) which is free along with Arena chess (Graphical User Interface). Both can be downloaded by google search. Or better yet purchase Fritz from www.chessbase.com. For those without internet, you can order through courier and purchase the software.

Minimum requirements for optimal performance, I recommend Fritz GUI and Houdini 3 engine and later. This post talks about achieving expert level play 2000-2200 single handedly without any outside human help except by using computer.

HARD WORK AND DEDICATION IS A MUST

Chess is a game of skill. This cannot be acquired over a short period of time. Reaching an expert level play would require at least a few years of study. Being said that, a person desirous of achieving the feat would have to go through a lot of sacrifices. There is no match for the amount of time spent practicing. Self learning asks for self discipline, self motivation and endlessly burning fire inside you to continue the journey.

How far or fast an individual will go ultimately depends on innate talents and intelligence. Going beyond expert would require you to take the game professionally.

GOOD MEMORY IS CRUCIAL

Tips 1. PLAY 10 MINUTES GAME IN www.chess.com

Sign up is free. Play here to see your improvement (ratings will be considered). For those of you without internet connection, play the computer. It will be a little difficult to tape your progress.

Tips 2. START UP THE ENGINE

Analyse your game with Fritz, memorize the book moves in the openings. By any means remember the openings as deep as you can. Play the same openings to build your repertoire.

Tips 3. STUDY TACTICS
Familiarize yourself with basic strategies and tactics. Solving tactics can be done manually by setting up the board using tactics book (Anthology of chess combinations, perfect your chess, chess tactics for champions) or online in www.chesstempo.com.

Tips 4. GO THROUGH HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF GRANDMASTER GAMES
Filter the master games according to your openings. Only play those openings and remember it. This process helps build your intuition.

Challenge: Memorize 10 grandmaster games lasting at least 30 moves in a day.
Challenge: Cross 2000 in chess.com within 5 years. Starting rating should not be more than 1400. People with more than 1400 should take 4 years.

Note: If you cross 2300 rating once in chess.dot any format britz or standard, you are a FIDE expert equivalent or better.

ROLE OF COMPUTER AS A PERSONAL COACH AND TRAINER

Present day computer being better than the most gifted genius, we have no doubt but to embrace the role that this machine could play for the benefit of the individual. A person with a computer is sitting with him a chess master that is invincible, tireless and ready for game anytime.

The drawback of a computer is that it didn't speak. For those who needs someone to scream at them to get the points out would prefer a person. A computer is a stone cold destroyer. A little mistakes and there is no redemption.

A computer database stores more than millions of games. This allows others to learn history of chess theory and the evolution thereafter. But the database could be used for a direct purpose of preparing for the game, specific opponent etc.

EVALUATION OF CHESS ENGINE

The highest rated human chess player at the moment is Magnus Carlsen 2870, computer a little above 3300. So, looking at that you might be a tough guy but you got to tremble before this monster.
